SPE Canadian Educational Foundation
Advancing Energy Education for all Canadians
Energy is at the heart of everything that we do. The mission of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Canadian Education Foundation (SPECEF) is to advance the energy literacy of all Canadians through providing access to fact-based energy education and supporting the energy leaders of tomorrow through our scholarship and awards programs.
In 2016, the SPE Canadian Educational Trust was converted into a new entity, the SPE Canadian Educational Foundation (SPECEF). With the new governance structure, SPECEF has the flexibility to create new programs, scholarships and energy educational initiatives that will benefit SPE Canada members.
Prior to the governance change, the SPE Educational Trust gave more than $300,000 CAD to Canadian post-secondary institutions in the form of bursaries; supported women in science and engineering through WISEST; and donated to science fairs in Calgary and Edmonton.
The SPECEF Board has plans to continue supporting Canadian energy education and grow its portfolio of programs. First on the list was the creation of a formalized Canadian post-secondary scholarship program aimed at science and engineering students, with committee representation from SPE Sections across Canada.
The Scholarship Committee is focused on the promotion of the next generation of energy scientists through scholarships and awards.
The Society of Petroleum Engineers Canadian Educational Foundation (SPECEF) will award several scholarships to students pursuing a degree or diploma with intentions to enter the petroleum industry upon graduation.
The scholarships, up to $5,500 CAD each, are open to students studying at all institutions in Canada. All applicants must be SPE Members (free for students, courtesy of Chevron!).
We are proud that in 2021-2022 the SPE Canadian Educational Foundation was able to award over $62,500 to 17 different students across 6 different institutions.
See what some of our previous scholarship recipients have to say about their experience with our scholarships and where they are now!
The Energy Literacy Committee is focused on delivery of content to educators and students to enhance the energy fluency of Canadians.
Our goal is a nation of Canadians that are Energy Fluent. We will achieve this by focusing on energy literacy in classrooms and their leaders. Through the ripple effect, we will achieve energy fluency in Canadians.
We strive to increase access to fact-based energy educational content across Canada. We will achieve this by, being the go-to website to connect educators with fact-based energy educational content.
